The February meeting of the Historical Society of Fort Washington will feature a presentation by Dr. Tom Wieckowski about one of the most celebrated residents of Gilded Age Cheltenham, Jay Cooke. He is best known for his heroic efforts to raise millions of dollars for federal expenses during the Civil War. After the war he directed the construction of the Northern Pacific Transcontinental railroad as well as the school which became Penn State Ogontz.This talk will explore his early life that prepared him for this accomplishment and review his tenure in Chelten Hills, where he built one of the most extravagant estates yet seen in the U.S. Dr. Wieckowski is vice-president of the Old York Road Historical Society and vice-chair of the Cheltenham Township Historical Commission. He graduated from Villanova University and holds a masters and PhD from Catholic University of America. After 30 years as a dean and professor at LeBow College of Business at Drexel University, retired and now pursues his lifelong interest in history. The program begins at 7:30 pm. Following the program refreshments will be served in the library.
