The Historical Society of Fort Washington is a non-profit educational institution. Our headquarters, the Clifton House, hosts monthly meetings for our member with educational programs, a library with a wealth of books about our area and a museum.

The Clifton House is leased from the commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The premises are situated within Montgomery County's Fort Washington State Park, which is under the auspices of the Bureau of State Parks.

We hope to see you at a future Society meeting or event!

Indian Paths Of Eastern Pennsylvania

The Society’s presentation at the January meeting will be given by James Tufano on the Lenape Indians of the Delaware Valley. The Lenapes traveled far and wide on foot throughout eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and northern Delaware, as well as the lower Hudson River Valley, Western Long Island and Manhattan in New York for hundreds of years. These travels were prior to their removal from their ancestral homelands by Europeans in the 17th and 18th centuries.

These old Indian footpaths served as the primary channels of trade, communication and cultural diffusion for the many native cultures of the region. These trails later became bridal paths, wagon roads, and railroads, and ultimately, the paved roadways we travel by automobile today.

Dr. James R. Tufano’s career as a teacher, principal and assistant-superintendent spanned 35 years. He has made a lifelong study of Native American history and culture and has traveled extensively to Native American villages, museums, libraries and related historical places of significance in the western United States and Canada.

The Victorian Tea 2019 fundraiser of The Historical Society of Fort Washington was a resounding success! Thank you goes to all our sponsors whom we could not have done without their generosity. A big thank you also goes to our wonderful guests, many of whom return year after year and our supportive members.
